So I spend Monday and Tuesday traveling to Ohio for work. I never realized that flying was so exhausting until I was pregnant!! I had to be up at 3:15am to catch my early morning flight out of Madison. I got to the airport probably earlier than I had to be but wanted to make sure I made my flight b/c it was for work and all. Well good thing I did b/c good 'ol me with my pregnancy brain forgot that you can't take liquid items over 3.5 oz as carry on! I had to be escorted back to the front counter to check my bag (with important work stuff in it) then go through security all over again. What a pain in the arse!
Then I finally arrive in Detroit for my connecting flight. If you've ever been to the Detroit airport you know it can be complete hell b/c it's so frickin huge and confusing. Well I politely ask the lady at the gate if she could tell me what gate I needed to go to for my connecting flight and if I could walk there in time. She gives me the gate information and lets me know that I can get there by walking. What she failed to mention was that I could get there by walking if I had 2 hours time to kill. I had less than 30 minutes to get from the far end of concourse A to concourse B. I finally get to the Express Tram and ask a very nice gentleman the quickest way to my gate. He proceeds to tell me and asks how long I have to get there. By this time I have less than 10 minutes to get to my gate. He gives me a "deer-in-headlights" look and says this trek normally takes him 20-30 minutes. Now I'm freaking out...and it's only 8:00am eastern time!! So I get off the tram and start running, Home Alone style, through the airport on the moving walkways. I am yelling at people to get out of my way so I can get to my plane.
Well, I get there and am probably the last one to board. At this point I am completely out of breath and exhausted (especially since I haven't worked out for longer than I care to admit). I take my seat and wait for takeoff, and wait, and wait, and wait. Yep, there was a mechanical problem so we sat at the terminal for 40 minutes while they fixed it. Then we sat on the runway for another 20 before we finally took off! Needless to say it was an adventure in Detroit.
The actual work in Ohio went great. But by the time I got home yesterday I was pretty damn tired and ready for bed. It is amazing how flying really takes it out of you. Although I did see a pregnant woman on one of my flights and just thought to myself, how the heck does she do it and look so pulled together? Then I look at myself and see my sweaty hair and wrinkled clothes from running and took a nap. I really didn't care how she did it. All I know is that I made it home yesterday and have never been so glad to be in Madison, in all it's cold glory, in my life!
